After seven years of delays, construction for a $40 million soccer complex in Salt Lake City is almost a reality. Tuesday night, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker asked the city council to give the go ahead on cashing in Real's $7.5 Million gift and $15 million in bonds. Voters approved the sports complex back in 2003 with those bonds. The Jordan River Restoration Network is petitioning the city to build the soccer fields somewhere else.
Conservationist Ray Wheeler says the complex will destroy wildlife habitat in what is considered one of the richest eco systems in Utah. Mayor Becker says the "city really focused its attention on having a good environmentally sound development, one that protects even restores the Riparian Corridor."
